several作形容詞有“幾個(gè)的，若干的；個(gè)別的；各自的”意思，修飾可數(shù)名詞的復(fù)數(shù)形式相對于a few，some而言，several較為正式，一般只能用于肯定句，強(qiáng)調(diào)“不止一兩個(gè)”。

1、several的用法

（1）I bought several books today.

今天我買了幾本書。

（2）There were several problems which tortured the elderly man.

有幾個(gè)問題折磨著那老人。

（3）They shook hands and went their several ways.

2、同義詞辨析

（1）a few意為“一些，幾個(gè)”。在數(shù)量上用于肯定意義，強(qiáng)調(diào)有一些，后接復(fù)數(shù)可數(shù)名詞。

I have a few friends in New York.我在紐約有幾個(gè)朋友。

（2）a number of意為“許多……，若干……”。強(qiáng)調(diào)數(shù)量的概念，也可說a large/small number of，后接復(fù)數(shù)可數(shù)名詞，謂語動詞用復(fù)數(shù)。

There are number of chairs in the hall.大廳里有一些椅子。

（3）some意為“一些，若干”。帶有不確定性，多用于肯定句中，后接復(fù)數(shù)可數(shù)名詞或不可數(shù)名詞。
